Event Design Inspired By The Met Gala Fashion
We’re always looking to infuse our event design with out of the box inspiration and the Met Gala fashion is where we always look. This year’s gala honored Comme des Garçons and Rei Kawakubo for its 2017 Costume Exhibition, focusing on designers who rethink fashion as pure creativity and strive for innovation. It felt like we were reading a page out of our own rule book! This avant-garde approach to fashion challenged us to choose varying styles and colors beyond our comfort zone. Below you’ll find our three favorite looks from the Met Gala and how they can inspire three distinctive event designs.
There’s no doubt that Rihanna is the undisputed queen of the Met Gala (and looks like others agree too!). This year was no different when Rihanna turned out in a stunning avant-garde gown designed by none other than Comme des Garçons. That said, the moment we saw Rihanna’s look we couldn’t help but think she was a walking event inspiration. We took cues directly from the dress’s bright color palette: vibrant red, romantic mauve, and a touch of contrasting pastel blue. Fun, floral, and super poppy, we could see this design translating to the perfect gal’s bachelorette party or the design for a non-traditional couple who wants fun to be the focus of their big day!
Our next winner came from Cara Delevingne’s futuristic pantsuit courtesy of Chanel. We got some serious out of this world vibes with her metallic and crystal star bedazzled hairdo, and we brought it back down to earth with some neutral and minimalist touches. To really mix it up, we threw in some contrasting black and white patterns which take the metallic/holographic cues to a very sophisticated level. Interstellar silver, meet your neutral bffs. Fresh winter wedding anyone?
Though Rihanna is hailed as official queen, our personal fave this year was Zendaya in her tropical meets classic ballgown designed by Dolce & Gabanna. We channeled Justina Blakeney all over this inspo board, pairing bright hues of orange and yellow with calming tropical green. A mix of bold prints catch your eye, and the whole aesthetic feels like you should be celebrating in a jungle paradise with a fresh squeezed cocktail in your hand. Obviously a destination wedding would really bring this design to life, but we’re not limiting it to an out of the country fete! Think rooftop pool in downtown Los Angeles or even a boutique Palm Springs hotel. Our fave!
